I know what you’re thinking. Winter car prep? We’re in Florida! But here’s the thing: even though we don’t deal with snow and ice like our northern friends, the cooler months still affect your vehicle in ways you might not realize. After 20 years working on cars in Eustis, I’ve seen plenty of preventable problems pop up when the temperature drops. Let me share what you should know.
Why Florida Winter Still Matters for Your Car
Sure, we’re not scraping ice off windshields or dealing with salt on the roads, but winter here brings its own challenges. Cooler overnight temperatures, increased humidity from those winter fronts rolling through, and the temperature swings between day and night can all mess with your car. Plus, a lot of folks come down to visit family or take road trips during the holidays, which means your car needs to be in top shape.
Battery Check is Priority One
Cold weather is tough on batteries, and yes, that includes Florida’s version of cold. When the temperature drops even into the 50s overnight, your battery has to work harder to start your engine. If your battery is already a few years old or showing signs of weakness, cooler weather might be all it takes to leave you stranded.
We recommend having your battery tested before winter really kicks in. Most batteries last about three to five years, but the heat we get here in summer can actually shorten that lifespan. A quick test takes just a few minutes and can save you from a dead battery on a chilly morning. We’ll check the charge, the connections for corrosion, and make sure everything’s secure.
Check Your Cooling System
I know it seems backwards, but your cooling system matters in winter too. The coolant in your car doesn’t just prevent overheating in summer. It also keeps things from freezing up when temperatures drop, and it protects against corrosion year round.
Make sure your coolant is at the right level and that it’s the correct mixture. Old coolant loses its effectiveness and can cause problems even in mild weather. If you can’t remember the last time you had your coolant flushed, winter’s a good time to get that done.
Tire Pressure Needs Attention
Temperature changes affect tire pressure more than most people realize. For every 10 degree drop in temperature, your tires can lose about one PSI (pound per square inch). That might not sound like much, but underinflated tires affect your fuel economy, handling, and how quickly your tires wear out.
Check your tire pressure at least once a month during winter, and definitely before any long trips. The right pressure is listed on a sticker inside your driver’s door jamb, not on the tire itself. While you’re at it, take a look at your tire tread. If it’s getting low, now’s the time to replace them, especially if you’re planning any holiday travel.
Don’t Forget Your Wipers and Washer Fluid
Winter in Florida means more rain. Those afternoon thunderstorms might slow down, but we get those steady winter rains that can last for hours. Your windshield wipers need to be in good shape to handle it.
If your wipers are streaking, skipping, or making noise, replace them. They’re cheap insurance for good visibility. Also, top off your windshield washer fluid. You’ll use more of it in winter when you’re dealing with road spray and general grime.
Lights and Visibility
With shorter days, you’re more likely to be driving in the dark or during those foggy winter mornings we get. Walk around your car and check all your lights. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights all need to be working properly. It’s not just about seeing where you’re going but about other drivers seeing you.
If your headlights look cloudy or yellowed, consider having them restored or replaced. Good visibility isn’t optional when you’re sharing the road.
Belts and Hoses
Temperature changes can be hard on rubber components like belts and hoses. They expand and contract with the temperature swings, which can lead to cracks or failures. A broken belt can leave you stranded, and a failed hose can cause your engine to overheat.
Have a mechanic take a look at your belts and hoses during your winter check. If anything looks worn, cracked, or soft, it’s better to replace it now rather than waiting for it to fail at the worst possible time.
Prepare for Holiday Road Trips
If you’re planning to head north to visit family or take a road trip, give your car some extra attention. A full inspection before a long trip can catch potential problems before they leave you on the side of I-75. We’re talking oil change, fluid check, tire inspection, brake check, and a general once over to make sure everything’s in good working order.
Keep an Emergency Kit
Even in Florida, it’s smart to have a basic emergency kit in your car. Throw in a flashlight, jumper cables, basic tools, a first aid kit, bottled water, and maybe a blanket. If you’re traveling with kids, add some snacks and entertainment. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
Schedule Your Pre-Winter Check
At RJ Fox Automotive, we can do a complete pre-winter inspection to make sure your car is ready for the cooler months and any holiday travel you have planned. We’ll check all the important systems, top off your fluids, and let you know if anything needs attention.
